In 2010 ARCAM (Amsterdam Centre for Architecture), the Academy of Architecture and Noorderkerkconcerten Foundation, together with a growing number of cultural institutes in Amsterdam, organize activities with a focus on the relation between music, space and architecture.

Exhibition Music, Space & Architecture An exposition at ARCAM brings visitors in contact with theories on music and space, soundart, citysounds and the perception of making and listening to music - with Xenakis and Stockhausen, concerthalls, earphones and silence. www.arcam.nl

Choir PA’dam led by Maria van Nieukerken; brass players of the Amsterdam Conservatorium led byBas Pollard; Amsterdam Viola Quartet led by Esther Apituley. With Marcel Reijans-tenor, Jan Willem Baljet-baritone. Some Canzones of Giovanni Gabrieli for brass players in a spacial setting, Stravinsky-Canticum Sacrum (written for the San Marco cathedral, Venice, 1956), Bach/Schebel-Contrapunctus (from Die Kunst der Fuge) and a new composition by Max Knigge (première). Introduction by Elmer Schönberger.

3 Oktober, 3.30 p.m., The Movies
Berlin, die Sinfonie der Groszstadt, Walther Ruttmann, 1927, 65 minutes, with live-music from David Kweksilber and Leo van Oostrom. Berlin, die Sinfonie der Groszstadt describes the rithm of a normal working day in Berlin in 1927. It is seen as a unique document from the experimental period of the silent movie, a filmed symphony of images and impressions of a big city. The original score with the movie is lost, but Kweksilber and Van Oostrom made their own music. www.themovies.nl

Ribattuta Ensemble & Hayo Boerema Chinchester Cathedral has a long musical tradition that goes back four centuries to the famous organplayer-composer Thomas Weelkes. Many composers have followed him and wrote compositions for services and festivals in the famous cathedral. Three of the most interesting and famous will be performed this afternoon. www.orgelpark.nl

5 - 19 June, Bach-pavillion by Zaha Hadid in the 'Gashouder'
Zaha Hadid created the perfect space for solo’s by Johann Sebastian Bach. She designed an open pavillion that is situated in the 'Gashouder' on Westergasfabriekterrein. Holland Festical presents three solo concerts by Bach in the pavillion alongside a contemporary music programme.

The Amsterdam Grachtenfestival (Canal Festival) is a yearly festival of (classical) music on special locations. It is the opening of the music season. This year ARCAM was one of the locations on August 15th. www.grachtenfestival.nl

The Electronic Poem, Edgard Varèse in the Netherlands. Documentary of Willem Hering and Hank Onrust, 1998, 60 minutes. In 1957 and 1958 the French composer Varèse worked in Eindhoven for nine months on his Poème électronique for the Philips-pavilion for the World expo of 1958.
Reconstruction of the Poème électronique, 2009, 12 minutes. First time the reconstruction is shown in public in the framework of the project 'Music, Space & Architecture'. www.themovies.nl |
