Project Island for sale!
In May 2014 it will be precisely 25 years since the memorandum of principles for Nieuw Oost (the start of the first phase of IJburg) was laid down. 25 years on, the first phase has been completed. The development process for IJburg phase II has been put on hold. Nevertheless, a start is to be made on creating land for Centrumeiland at the end of 2013.
Amsterdam City Council has published an exploratory document containing a number of findings from IJburg I and the first ideas for Centrumeiland. Suggestions include energy self-sufficiency and exemption from the parking norm.
Putting the planning on hold creates space for reflection and experimentation. ARCAM is taking over the baton from the council, is to step into the space left by the retreating government and take charge of exploring plans for the island. ARCAM is calling on everyone to contribute ideas on the future of Centrumeiland and to this end will be organizing a public debate with ordinary citizens and professionals.
From early 2014, it will be possible to share plans, ideas, suggestions or views with ARCAM and the public. In autumn 2014, ARCAM will hand the inventory on to the new municipal executive. The next step will be to consider how this might be developed further.
