1Lectures | Preservation and Renewal: Bauhaus and International Style Buildings in Tel Aviv | Micha Gross

The celebration of The Bauhaus Centenary is coming to an end when Micha Gross, co-founder of the Bauhaus Center Tel Aviv takes the 1Lectures stage on 28 November 2019. Art Historian Mienke Simon Thomas will briefly outline the presence of Bauhaus in The Netherlands and Amsterdam.

Gross will present the architectural development of Tel Aviv and its White City, referring to a collection of over 4.000 buildings in the Bauhaus style from the 1930s by German Jewish architects who immigrated to Mandatory Palastine after the rise of the Nazis. He will elaborate on the historical circumstances that led to the construction of the ‘Bauhaus City’. Before going into detail on the rather poor state of the buildings that makes preservation and renewal crucial, he will discuss White City’s features and its urban plan. Tel Aviv’s unique way of dealing with this subject makes the final part of the lecture.
