Former bicycle factory transformed into multi-company building

In a sheltered business park between the Schinkel and the A10 ring road, a former bicycle factory has been converted into office and commercial accommodation. Three separate lettable office villas have been added and this ensemble of buildings forms the ‘A-Factorij’.

Four patios with glazed elevations have been ‘cut’ out of the factory’s volume, allowing daylight to penetrate all of the interior spaces. The three office villas are characterized by large, square, cantilevered volumes with deep-set windows. The offices seem to peer over the ring road through these ‘eyes’. Each villa comprises three storeys. Above the ground floor with display window spaces are small office spaces and sanitary facilities. At the rear of the building, the cantilevered volumes adjoin the factory building with their curved backs, a reference to the factory’s characteristic sawtooth roof. In the materialization of the design, the aim was to create a balance between the old and the new sections. For example, the brickwork and the aluminium window frames reinforce the relationship with the old building. (ARCAM/LM)
