Four white towers

An area between Pieter Calandlaan and Jan van Zutphenplantsoen in the southern tip of the district of Osdorp is undergoing a transformation. Outdated porch-access flats have been replaced by more varied housing, with rows of low-rise dwellings in the middle of the neighbourhood and taller apartment buildings on the edges. Four eleven-storey residential towers have been built on a vacant strip of land along Jan van Zutphenplantsoen and the water of Slotervaart. These tall slabs are spaced well apart in a park setting. Their end elevations engage with the water on one side and with the neighbourhood on the other. The volumes are raised on both sides so that they literally open towards the water and the neighbourhood.

The blocks contain a total of 390 apartments in the rental and owner-occupied sector and all have a central core around which the apartments are grouped. This layout made it possible to create mirrored floor plans and flexible storeys. The apartments have between two and five rooms and range in size from 70 m2 to 140 m2. All of the apartments have a three-metre-wide sliding door that gives access to a glazed-in sunroom, or – in the case of the easternmost tower – a wall-to-wall balcony. A sliding/folding wall allows the sunroom to become part of the living room.
The exterior appearance of the blocks is characterized by horizontal bands of storey-high windows and a pattern of aluminium façade panels, which accentuates the individual apartments.

The mirrored apartments give rise to a varied pattern on the exterior elevation, which can be seen as a subtle game with the concepts of standardization and individualization. All four towers stand on top of an underground parking garage whose roof has been laid out as a public park with a waterside promenade. On this side in particular, due to the rhythm of the urbanistic setting, the ensemble evokes associations with early post-war modernism and, more specifically, with the famous block of flats by the architect J. F. Berghoef on Cornelis Lelylaan. (ARCAM)
