What resources do architects (re)discover in building inclusive communities, homes and neighborhoods? In this season of Architecture Now, we examine the role of architects and urban planners in a changing society. This first edition under the name My friend, the architect; inspired by the essay of Adeola Enigbokan, “Citizen-Architect-Friend,” published in Yearbook of Architecture in the Netherlands 2019/2020. The focus is not so much on the end product, the building, but on the manufacturing process in all its facets. Each edition is introduced by one of the essayists / editors of the Architecture Yearbook, in which concepts such as (un)shared history, inclusivity, identity and representation are explored in relation to the design process.

Laura Alvarez is director of Laura Alvarez Architecture, a young international architectural firm in Amsterdam. After extensive work experience at renowned architectural firms such as Mecanoo, SeARCH, Benthem Crouwel and Carlos Ferrater, she founded her own architectural firm in 2008. In this Livecast we are specifically talking about her work in Werkplaats Molenwijk. In 2017, Laura started her research into post-war neighborhoods and how the typology of the neighborhood influences the social cohesion and interaction between local residents.

Adeola Enigbokan is an environmental psychologist. Using creative public engagement, she re-imagines the relationships between citizens, consumers, institutions and corporations, and the environments they inhabit. She combines deep knowledge of human behavior and emotional intelligence, with a sense of how social and spatial systems work and how creative change happens. She consults on the design of urban housing, workspaces, urban public space and emerging technologies. She has taught Urban Sociology at the University of Amsterdam and New York University, Architectural Design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and Social Design at Design Academy Eindhoven. She holds a PhD in Psychology from the City University of New York, and a BA in Anthropology from Columbia University.
