Housing and community care centre

The master plan for Haveneiland (IJburg) consists of a grid of roads, waterways and blocks. A number of different architectural offices fleshed out the designs for each block. KCAP Architects & Planners drew up the urban design scheme for Block 11 and, together with the offices Loof and Van Stigt, BPvF and Visser Van Aalderen, worked up the detail of the architectural programme.

The plan for Block 11 is largely determined by the canal that slices transversely through the block, giving rise to two halves, which then open towards the water. The block comprises a series of built clusters containing dwellings, commercial spaces and care facilities. The aim was to create an architectural unity within which the designs by the various architects would be recognizable as independent buildings. This was achieved partly due to the extensive material and colour proposals.

The dwelling typology is a combination of town houses and courtyard dwellings, which has resulted in a block with an urban aura on the outside and a tranquil and enclosed living environment in the inner courtyard. In addition to dwellings, the block also houses a large number of care functions. The community care centre is recognizable due to the white projecting window casings and aluminium frames in the façade design. The combination of housing and facilities fits in with the planners’ idea that IJburg should be more than just a residential area. IJburg is already a vibrant city district where people live, work, recreate and are cared for. (ARCAM/YK)
