View on the South side of IJ

When in 2003 Amsterdam city council acquired the Shell site on the north side of the IJ, this opened up the possibility of developing ‘Overhoeks’, a completely new city district with housing, offices and cultural facilities. Before the tower, the former staff restaurant and a few other buildings are converted to a new use, for a period of five years they are to house various cultural activities. Visitors from Amsterdam Noord, as well as from the rest of Amsterdam, will undoubtedly find their way to this cultural hotspot.

In order to access the area, in 2006 the project office Noordwaarts organized a competition for a bridge over Buiksloterkanaal, parallel to the IJ and a stone’s throw from the pier where the ferry docks.
The competition was won by korth tielens architects. They designed a sturdy yet transparent bridge whose diagonal, light green-grey girders refer to the architecture of the tower ‘Overhoeks’, with its canteen, by Arthur Staal.

The bridge was built in Vlissingen and was transported over water to Amsterdam, where it was raised into position with the help of pontoons. The bridge’s balustrades slope obliquely downwards in the opposite direction, as a result of which the sight lines are different from different viewpoints. Moreover, there are openings, with integrated led lighting, in the girders. A composition of large steel rings fills these ‘windows’ like a net curtain, reinforcing the impression of a ‘living room in the public space’. Another important point of reference was the design for the New Film Museum by Delugan Meissl Associated Architects, which is currently under construction and is scheduled to open in 2011. If you walk or cycle over the bridge, the surrounding landscape passes before your eyes literally like a film. You want to focus on a single point and take in the panoramic view over the IJ at the same time. (ARCAM/FG)
