The new style treasure house Het Collectiecentrum of the Amsterdam Museum (formerly the Amsterdam Historical Museum) is located in the Cornelis Douwesterrein business park in Amsterdam-Noord.
In recent years, a number of architecturally interesting buildings have been built in this business park (approximately a 5 minute bicycle ride from the NDSM-werf ferry), including FriJo Lichtreclame on Netwerkweg by Patrick Koschuch Architecten and the Hulshoff archives building on Back-Upstraat by ITZ-Architecten. Diagonally opposite this latter building is the Amsterdam Museums Collectiecentrum (collection centre).
The Amsterdam Museum had been looking for some considerable time for a storage facility for its extensive historical collection and opted for new build. The building was to house, in addition to storage spaces, a restoration studio and multifunctional workspaces. The architect Wim Quist has designed a robust brick building and has given each of the various components a character all its own. The two completely closed side aisles contain the storage spaces. The central section has a more open character and comprises the entrance with porters lodge and a packing facility on the ground floor, with workspaces on the floors above. From here there is a stunning view of the IJ. The workspaces accommodate staff, curators, restorers, researchers, volunteers and artists who want to consult the collection or work on objects.
The semi-public character of the Collectiecentrum is a good example of the new attitude in the museum world, in which the relationship with the public has an increasingly reciprocal character. The Collectiecentrum is not a fortress but rather a treasure house, which now and then reveals its glittering treasures. (ARCAM/FG)
