The Amsterdam ConservatoryHaving outgrown its old accommodation on Van Baerlestraat, in 2008 the Amsterdam Conservatory moved to new premises, a specially designed glass building, sandwiched between the Public Library and the Post CS building, on Oosterdokseiland. The neighbouring Central Station ensures excellent accessibility but, unfortunately, it is also a source of noise pollution. This problem has been solved by using a so-called ‘engawa’, a Japanese system whereby the stairwell is positioned around the building, as a result of which it also acts as a noise buffer. The programme comprises three components, which is evident in the building’s various storeys. The public section, which consists of the concert halls and the foyer/canteen, is literally the ‘playing heart’ and occupies the first five floors, two of which are underground. The five concert halls, including the Bernard Haitink Hall for classical music and the Amsterdam Blue Note Jazz/Pop Hall, each have their specific acoustic qualities. In the middle section are the classrooms and practice rooms, which differ as regards format and acoustics. This is indicated by striking colours. The top floor contains the study department with, among other things, the lecture hall and the library. |
