Under the proposition ‘new is better, isn’t it?’, students at the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture have devised a number of bold proposals for new buildings for Damrak. The plans were on view throughout December 2010 at ARCAM.
In contrast to, for example, the IJ Waterfront or the Zuidas, no renewal plans with any ‘metropolitan ambition’ have been drawn up for this prominent and distinctive street. The students were presented with the question: what and how to build if the area between Damrak, Dam, Nieuwendijk and Prins Hendrikkade were the construction site. A not entirely imaginary task in view of the construction of the new North/South metro line and the upcoming reorganization of the public space.
