De Binderij housing complex

For seventy years, the bookbinding firm Stokkink produced special editions of unusual books on Kostverlorenvaart in Amsterdam West. Because of the heavy machines necessary for this, concrete floors and mushroom columns formed the basis of the building. The building, painted white and provided with an extra storey but with the retention of the heavy floors and columns, has now been redeveloped into a parking garage with live/work spaces and lofts, with three new build sections that complete the complex. The latter are interconnected via an inner garden on the roof of the former bookbinders.

Ten split-level dwellings have their entrance on a deck, from where there is a view of the boats moored below inside the building in an internal boat garage. Fencing separates the boat garage from the canal, and from inside, the sound of sloshing water indicates the intensity of traffic on the canal at a particular moment. Because it is possible to sail right inside the building, Kostverlorenvaart has an almost Venetian feel. On the side of the water, the dwellings have a balcony with steel balustrade, which is so designed that it provides both a view of the water and the necessary privacy.

On the short side, the complex is terminated by a four-storey apartment block containing the central entrance to the communal deck. The terraces of the existing dwellings on Gillis van Ledenberghstraat are contiguous with this. On this street, moreover, new workspaces have been created on the ground floor and there is a new small urban square on the corner, as a result of which there is contact with the water from the street.
