Densifying, enlivening, connecting
A number of urban renewal projects with a major impact have been realized close together in the heart of the citys Bos en Lommer district. Projects such as Bos en Lommerplein and the office complex built over the A10 orbital motorway were aimed at densifying, enlivening and connecting the various areas. Housing, too, is an essential part of the renewal operation. For example, Hoofdweg between Erasmusgracht and Bos en Lommerplein has been completed in accordance with the old profile. Together with an older housing block, designed by the architect Hans Wagner, three new housing blocks form as it were an overture to the square. One of the three housing blocks is the project De Buskenblaser.
Taking its cue from the Amsterdam School architecture on the other side of Erasmusgracht, the block has a horizontal tripartition. The plinth contains retail spaces, in between which are two brightly coloured entrances. The five storeys above are executed in red brick, punctuated with oriel windows. The sixth storey is distinguished by a cornice with a series of vertical strips.
The block has an elongated U shape. It is open on the south side in order to allow the penetration of sunlight and to provide a view of Erasmuspark. The interior courtyard is closed and contrasts with the exterior because here short galleries have been left in view and the elevations are clad with light-coloured, reflective panels. An elongated opening in the deck of the interior courtyard provides a view of the parking garage beneath.
On the side of the old Bos en Lommer, the block is two storeys lower than on Hoofdweg in order to link the block in with the existing porch-access flats. (ARCAM)
