Urban complex with parking, shopping mall, office space, hotel and 38 apartments

The De Kolk project is situated in the heart of Amsterdam’s old city centre, with its medieval street pattern. The complex is contained in three building blocks which are separated by the existing alleys. The first block is an office building in the sharp corner between Nieuwezijds Kolk and Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal. The other two blocks house shops and cafés and restaurants on the ground floor and the first floor. These functions are accessed via an entrance on Nieuwendijk.

The hotel, which is situated above the shops, has 235 rooms on four floors and is accessed via an entrance on Nieuwezijds Kolk. The dwellings (part new-build, part renovation) are situated on the edges of the block and above the shops. The various functions within the complex have been expressed in the façades by giving each function its own aura. In order to fit the complex into its historic surroundings, aspects of the surrounding façades have been employed; for example, the strong vertical articulation and the visual distinction between ground floor and upper storeys. The façades consist of prefabricated concrete, bricks in various colours in vertical tile bonding, wood, and agglutinated glass in different hues. (ARCAM/BM)
