Housingblock functions as a noise barrier
The project stands next to the A10 orbital motorway, between Rembrandtpark and Sloterplas, and is part of the renewal operation Overtoomse Veld, a sub-project in the transformation of the city?s Westelijke Tuinsteden district.
A closed plinth, which is clad with bright orange wooden slats and contains a parking garage, commercial spaces and live/work dwellings, forms the project?s contours. On top of the plinth are six blocks of varying height. The blocks are ordered in four rows, which are situated behind each other and are parallel to the A10. The tallest building, which stands directly next to the motorway, also functions as a noise barrier for the rest of the complex. The sound-deadening glass façade and the wall behind are executed in various shades of pink, as a result of which this block is recognizable from the motorway by its rich colour. The elevations in the three surrounding streets are executed in dark grey brick, in accordance with the directions of the area?s supervisor. As a result, De Meester is in keeping with the neighbouring new build on Alma Tademastraat by DKV architects.
The exterior space between the blocks and above the plinth is a semi-open area for the use of residents. A wooden deck and a number of bridges connect the blocks. Openings in the deck provide daylighting in the garage. The ambience is largely determined by the fact that there were no regulations governing the design of the interior court and by the white stuccowork, which gives it a Mediterranean feel. The elevated bridges are of transparent greenish yellow and blue glass, as are the balconies. The three blocks closest to the A10 contain 57 rental apartments. The other blocks contain 49 owner-occupied apartments. In total, fourteen different dwelling types have been designed. (ARCAM/BU)
