‘Huis van Ambachten’ in Bijlmer Oost
The National Opera and Ballet’s scenery studio on Kollenbergweg is where the scenery, costumes and theatre props are made. The studio contains a flytower with exactly the same dimensions as that in the Muziektheater – home of the National Opera and Ballet-, so that the scenery can be designed in situ.
The building stands on the base, which is still visible, of the original studio of 1962. For its renovation and extension, VMX Architects devised a series of clever modifications. For example, extra space has been created inside for more workshops and storage facilities and for a ‘truck dock’ so that the scenery can be loaded more efficiently. A simple but essential intervention was the insulation of the inside of the sheet metal elevations.
In the elongated north elevation, much of the sheeting has been replaced by glass so that north light now floods inside. Those at work here now have a view out and the activity inside the building is visible from the street – as in the surrounding showrooms. Most striking of all, however, is the studio’s bright red exterior. As a result, the building is a landmark in the surrounding area. (MB)
