Do It Yourself! Take this (walking)tour and discover the latest architecture of Amstelkwartier (Amsterdam East)
Amstelkwartier is booming! It’s becoming one of the most popular parts of town. This area is known for its transformation and self build projects, hotels and for its small harbour. The characteristic monuments, such as Bijlmer Bajes (former prison), show the history of this area and are a great addition to the new urban plan.
The new urban plan focuses on redeveloping city icons such as the Bijlmer Bajes, Rivierstaete (former office), The Kauwgomballenfabriek (gumball factory) and the Zuidergasfabriek (Southern gasworks). These monuments are being redeveloped and transformed into homes, offices, hotels and cafe’s. The interaction between the new and the old is an important and integrated component of the urban development plan.
This tour will take you from Amstel Station, via Amstel River to the gumball factory. Discover the new icons of this city district!
