Landmark on the IJ

EYE Film Institute is a landmark. From the moment the location on the north side of the IJ was chosen, the aim was that the building should not only be a new focal point in the world of cinema, but also a landmark in the city. And this has been spectacularly achieved. The relationship between the presentation of the building from a distance and the interior is strong. In that context, the large, stepped central space with a restaurant on several levels is a splendid continuation of the entourage along the IJ.

Most visitors to the EYE will approach it from the ferry opposite Centraal Station. From there, a walking and cycle route passes the building and even goes underneath it, or so it seems. The cantilever on this side is an enormous 32 metres.

Shallow steps lead to the entrance on the upper level, from where virtually every visitor goes almost immediately to the atrium behind. The heart of EYE is a tangle of routes inside the building. The restaurant here is a public meeting place and gives access to the terrace, four cinemas, 1,200 square metres of exhibition space, a shop, offices and special spaces such as ‘a room with a view’.

The architects and the client have conceived the building as a transition from the reality of the setting to cinematographic fiction. To this end, the design leans heavily on the quality of the scenic view over the water and the alternation of light, view and space along the route through the building and through the day. Inside and outside, there is not a single right angle. On the exterior, this generates striking graphic qualities. Around the steel frame is a skin, a puzzle comprising 12,500 m2 of aluminium pieces – pristine white, so that the light is reflected in innumerable ways. (ARCAM/MB)
