Multipurpose Centre

With its gently curved streets and perimeter blocks, the neighbourhood Transvaalbuurt is typical of the work of H.P. Berlage and the architecture of the Amsterdam School. This was also true of the school building (built in 1915) that until recently dominated Joubertplein, but which gradually fell into disrepair. The task here therefore was to build another brick building as part of the square’s frontage.

Programmatically, this was a complex task. Space had be created in the building for the offices of a reintegration agency and for classrooms, prayer rooms and meeting rooms for a Turkish and Moroccan social and cultural migrants organization. The building’s functions are evident on the façade. The latter has a symmetrical layout with a central main entrance, on either side of which are the entrances to the two double height prayer spaces. The offices are located on the top storey and extend over the entire width of the building. The large window above the entrance marks the collective multipurpose spaces in the heart of the building.

The different degree of transparency of the various parts of the façade is in relation to the desired level of privacy, which is different in each part of the building. From a distance, the brickwork near the entrances appears to be closed, but close up it is strikingly open. There is a regular pattern of small square windows where the prayer spaces are located, in combination with a large window at street level. The windows of the offices are also square but are larger. The building combines a sturdy character with a subtle use of ornament and so fits in with the traditions of both the Amsterdam School and Islamic architecture. (ARCAM)
