Residential building with spacious terracesGebouw Emmy Andriesse is situated on the eastern tip of IJburgs Haveneiland. The block (number 65a) is surrounded by Emmy Andriessestraat and Peter Martensstraat and by the water of Profiltigracht and IJmeer. As regards format, the block conforms to its metropolitan context. Because of the brown colour of the stone, the building fits in well in the streetscape of Haveneiland Oost. The façade on Emmy Andriessestraat is further characterized by the use of tall windows with aluminium frames, white lintels and balconies. The two entrances are located on the ground floor on the street side and communal spaces have been created in a number of places in the building. The most striking part of Gebouw Emmy Andriesse is its rear side. Attika architects opted to set back the living level on each storey, giving rise to terraces measuring 11 by 3.5 metres – huge by Amsterdam standards. In most cases, the terraces have a storage space and are bordered with tall grasses. The exterior spaces provide a stunning view over IJmeer and Diemerpark. The blocks waterside location has been exploited to the full. (ARCAM/YK) |
