Concert hall with room for 5,000 people
Along with the development of the ArenA stadium, Amsterdam decided to develop a second city centre in the surrounding area with the aim of raising the status of Amsterdam Zuidoost as a whole. One of the requirements was for a venue for popular music concerts in this centre zone, for those popular musicians who preferred not to perform in the main stadium.
The Heineken Music Hall was design by Frits van Dongen, as was the adjacent Pathé Arena cinema complex. Besides a large auditorium with capacity for an audience of 5,000, the Music Hall incorporates two smaller auditoria, an elongate foyer and backstage facilities. The logistic services and acoustics of the building were designed specifically with amplified music in mind. Every seat in the main auditorium enjoys an uninterrupted view of the stage, since the hall was constructed without columns or other potential visual obstructions. One of the smaller auditoria on the first floor has three large round windows which can be obscured with a special construction. (ARCAM/JB)
