Reuse of monumental ensembles

ARCAM organizes on the eve of ‘Open Heritage Day Amsterdam’ on Friday September 9 a debate about the reuse and transformation of large industrial sites.

Four high-profile areas of development in Amsterdam and Zaanstad shall be considered: the NDSM and Van Gendt Hallen in Amsterdam, and the Hembrug site and Verkadefabriek in Zaanstad. During the debate we will address the process, pitfalls and successes. Four experts share their involvement in the above areas from their knowledge of the transformation of these areas. A conversation with the audience will follow after this. Questions like: Is the listed monument status a plus or a burden, which functions are eligible and how do they get profitable; Should rules be altered to allow for rezoning?

UAR Reallocation routes for smartphone users
At the end of the debate ARCAM and BMA launch two Reuse Heritage routes in the UAR app architecture. Owners of a suitable Google Android smartphone (with internet, camera and compass), or an iPhone 3G or iPhone, these four routes, download and use from this point: during the heritage days the app is a handy gadget to take a walk!

There is a cycle route along the IJ, Van Gendt Hallen to Westergasfabriekterrein, paying attention to industrial heritage. The other route runs through the city, passing the Office of General Bank Netherlands (Duintjer CS) and the St. Olof Chapel. This route highlights the wide range of transformation tasks. Both routes pay attention to the various procedures involved in redevelopment, the role of the (restoration) architects, and the concept of authenticity.

The architecture app UAR contains information about architecture in a number of cities. For Amsterdam are around 500 buildings from the present, past and future in the app described and illustrated. The NAI UAR (Urban Augmented Reality) was developed. ARCAM and BMA arranged the contents of the Amsterdam section. The app grants users a glimpse of what is but also what is not: buildings that have disappeared, never built or yet to emerge. For more information: UAR.
