A campsite feel

The section of Watergraafsmeer to the north of the railway line, the Science Park, has been under development for many years and is currently being further renewed and expanded with the addition of more scientific and technical institutes and companies and – for the first time – housing; a 45-metre residential tower block on a low base now marks the western entrance to the Science Park.

The entrance to the block is a bridge over a castle moat, giving access to the interior courtyard of the U-shaped low-rise building. The dwellings vary: apartments and penthouses in the tower, single-family residences and those with water rooms at the lower level. The single-family homes have their front doors and partially screened-off private spaces on half-open boardwalk decking. Almost every apartment has a balcony, a terrace or a roof terrace; contact between residents has a campsite feel to it.

The construction and the materials used in the façade of the housing block were informed by its proximity to a shunting yard. To dampen the noise of trains the building has a specially-designed façade surrounding it as a separate skin of linked, storey-high glass panels, some of which can be opened. The glass panels tilt in relation to each other, reflecting light and skies to give the building a dynamic presence. (ARCAM)
