Grid of three squares repeated twice
A considerable amount of space in the urban plan for IJburg has been reserved for private commissioning. There have been many experiments in this regard in recent years and several residents have already twice engaged an architect to design a home for them here.
The occupants of the villa at number 9 Ligusterhof, for example, have twice commissioned Claudia Schmidt to design a house for them. The first is situated on Kleine Riet -eiland and the other, where they currently live, is on Rieteiland Oost. The clients wanted a larger kitchen in their new home and a smaller living room. The result is a floor plan based on a grid of three squares, repeated twice, which are arranged differently on each storey. A corridor connects the kitchen and the living room, which are of identical format, in a diagonally way, thus creating long sidelines A slender steel staircase in the hall leads to the upper floor. The three bedrooms and the other rooms here have a view of the green and watery surroundings. The house has a steel frame and was largely assembled on site with prefabricated com ponents. The shell was erected separate from the technical installations and the detailing is such that relatively minor modifications to the floor plan can be made in the future. Steel beams connect the patio at the rear and the large cantilever at the front with the house and unify the various volumes into a cohesive whole. (ARCAM)
