Office building with facilities in the base

On the site De Pakhuysen, old warehouses and contemporary blocks together form a new whole of interpenetrating buildings, in between which there are views through to the IJ. The buildings stand on a collective base containing a parking garage and the entrances are situated in an elongated communal square. In addition to the master plan, KCAP also designed the parking garage and two of the four sculptural blocks, one of which is Huys Azië.

Huys Azië comprises two sections. A large L-shaped brick volume rests against a low-rise section that looks like a stripped old warehouse. Both sections are, however, new and as an ensemble of building volumes with a different size and materiality are in keeping with the character of the rest of the development on the site. The low-rise section is executed in steel and glass and has large windows. The brick section is solid on the ground floor but becomes increasingly tenuous towards the top, due to the fact that the window articulation changes. The top four storeys have the widest windows and are also provided with corner windows, which gives the building an airy appearance. (KCAP)
