Integral Childcentre at ‘pioneers island’ Zeeburgereiland
The Integral Child Centre on Zeeburgereiland was completed in 2013. This Montessori Child Centre, the IKC Zeeburgereiland, combines a number of functions such as after-school care and a primary school.
The design process for this building was a pilot. Amsterdam City Council brought together a consortium whereby the building was developed collectively by all parties concerned (architects, building contractors, technical services companies etc.) right from the outset. Working with a consortium, the architectural office Studioninedots is to develop a series of schools, in the Houthavens and Buiksloterham, for example.
The school can expand to absorb an increase in pupil numbers. Currently, primarily the ground floor spaces are in use. On the floor above, the size of the classrooms can be altered by means of sliding doors. The design by Studioninedots provides for further expansion; additional classrooms can be built on the roof within the duration of the summer holiday.
The contrast between the sturdy volume and the light interior above the central space comes as a surprise. The classrooms in pastel colours are grouped around this tall central space. At the top of the building is a gymnasium with a view of the three silos that characterize Zeeburgereiland.
Enjoy the aftermovie of the Architecture Ball that took place on Friday the 13th of May at W Hotel Amsterdam.
