Office building on the A10 ring road

The ING Group headquarters – nicknamed ‘de schaats’ (the skate) and ‘de kruimeldief’ (the dustbuster) – is a ‘landmark’ in the southwest entrance to the city. It forms part of the development of the Zuidas (Southern Axis), whose economic importance is partly due to the proximity of Schiphol. With this building, ING’s aim was to project transparency, environmental awareness and a focus on innovation.

The architects have translated these wishes into a futuristic building which is almost entirely enclosed in glass. Considerable attention has been paid to the use of natural materials and to energy-saving measures. Because the building stands on posts ranging from nine to twelve metres in height, from the ring road and from the metro there is a view underneath the building of the green area around Nieuwe Meer.

The volume slopes down towards the green periphery of the city. As a result, many of the spaces in the building have wide views. The interior is characterized by a large number of atria, loggias, patios and interior gardens, whose presence is felt throughout the building as a result of its transparency. The gardens have been designed by Michael van Gessel. (ARCAM/JV)
