Pavilion on ArenA Boulevard

A temporary pavilion, housing Restaurant Jinso, designed by cepezed already stood on this strategic site – in the transitional zone near the station area – before the completion of ArenA Boulevard.

By incorporating this temporary pavilion in a larger oval volume, the circulation routes have been accentuated and the building has become an integral part of the boulevard’s layout, designed by Karres and Brands landscape architects, with its undulating paving and long benches with rounded forms.

Because the paving continues in the pavilion, the restaurant looks like a large outdoor café, an impression strengthened by the fact that the all-round glass façade can be opened almost completely on the recessed ground floor. A concrete circulation gallery, which looks out over the boulevard, is situated at a height of three metres along the facade.

The façade is supported by a steel construction, comprising slender posts that are supported by the columns behind. The glass panels were cold bent on site. Three bend radii were needed to get the glass to follow the elliptical floor plan. The anti-sun, insulating glass allowed the creation of a climate-controlled restaurant with a winter garden effect.

The roof construction comprises cross beams, on top of which is a translucent roof. This roof is composed of pneumatic cushions, comprising four layers of so-called EFTE foil. The innermost layers are provided with a print with foliage motif, which gives solar protection. Cold air is delivered to the cushions via pipes that run through the sections of the construction.
