Housingcomplex for people aged 55 and over

‘De Kadoelerbreek’ is a new project in De Banne, an urban renewal district in Amsterdam Noord. This large-scale project, named after the adjacent nature area, comprises 180 dwellings, both in the upmarket and the social rental sector, specifically intended for people aged 55 and over, as well as a number of group dwellings. For occupants of the complex and local residents there is a restaurant and extensive care and welfare facilities.

The complex is designed as an ensemble of three different building volumes arranged in a U shape around a collective inner garden courtyard, with a view of the adjoining nature area. A spacious parking facility is located underneath the garden. The blocks range considerably in height. The block on Banne Buikslootlaan, on the short side of the U, is fifteen storeys high. The other blocks are five and ten storeys high. The three volumes are mainly of brick and each has its own character due to the various colour combinations in anthracite, orange and broken white. There are large areas of glass in the complex’s high groundfloor plinth, giving rise to an open and neighbourhoodoriented character. Frames and concrete bands emphasize the façade openings. Because of traffic noise, the windows on the street side are quite small and the elevations have a flat, straightforward character. On the side of the inner garden courtyard, however, the elevations are more varied and rhythmical due to the different ways in which the dwellings interface with the collective area, and due to the galleries, glazed lower fronts and balconies.
