Transparent with privacy

De Nieuwe Ooster cemetery covers the large area between Middenweg and Gooiseweg. The cemetery is undergoing a large-scale, phased redevelopment. Part of this programme is the recently completed offices with funeral centre designed by Bierman Henket architects. Up until 2012, the entrance to the cemetery was on Kruislaan, but now that the offices and funeral centre have been relocated to the cemetery’s southern section, the second public entrance is on Rozenburglaan. Karres and Brands landscape architects have remodelled the cemetery park, which was designed in 1889 by Leonard Springer.

The new, elongated pavilion is situated parallel to Gooiseweg/Rozenburglaan. The building has two storeys, both of which are visible from the road, but only one of which is visible from the car park. One side of the lower part of the building is set in an embankment. The western section contains offices and spaces for maintenance staff. The eastern section contains the funeral centre. Here, four funeral parlours, two foyers and support facilities are ingeniously interconnected.

On the side of the entrance, the base is slightly raised, as a result of which the building appears to hover. The façade is terminated by a projecting cornice. Looking along the building, it appears to have a closed façade due to the vertically positioned wooden columns, ribs and louvres. Viewed from the front, however, glass dominates the façade. This creates the necessary privacy for visitors.

The building is completely climate neutral. It has been designed in accordance with the principles of Industrial Flexible and Demountable construction (IFD). The entire building is prefabricated. (ARCAM/MB)
