Office building on the A2

The office building of the State Department of Roads and Waterways houses the agency responsible for managing the road network around Amsterdam. For this reason, the building is situated on a national trunk road (the A2) and has been given a striking presence in the direction of the motorway user.

The building has a triangular floor plan, whose sharpest angle pierces right through the dike along the road. A glass screen has been folded around the ceramic interior elevation in such a way that an intermediate space measuring 90 centimetres has been created. This cavity, which has natural ventilation, is one of the building’s energy-saving features and is also a buffer against noise pollution. The interior is characterized by considerable openness. The glazed roof above the central hall provides natural daylighting in the core of the building and in the offices situated on this hall. (ARCAM/BU)
