Demountable building

Sustainability is central to the ambitions of the engineering firm Search and the architectural office Witteveen Architecten. Which is why the choice of location for Search’s Amsterdam office, near the Coentunnel in Westpoort, is surprising. It would seem that a site with a high C02 concentration has deliberately been chosen in order to give expression to the ‘cradle-to-cradle’ principle.

A package of measures has been deployed. For example: the climate system ensures that the air is clean inside and outside. In order to maximize solar heat, the north side of the building is blank-walled and the south side is glazed. An overhang restricts the entrance of direct sunlight, whereas the upper floor has skylights. The roof functions as a heat exchanger, heat and cold sources are deployed by means of electronics. Solar panels and two wind turbines generate electricity for use in the building and, moreover, deliver electricity to the grid. There is a grey water system, the furniture is recyclable and waste is restricted. The result: a remarkable, and ever-declining, epc value of 0.6, without increased building costs.

Physically, the building, which contains office space, a laboratory and a training area, is of a sturdy character. The set-back glazed façade is provided with anthracite-coloured panels and a plinth and cornice in the same colour. The building is of solid timber construction with glued pinewood and a 16-centimetre thick insulation layer. The building is demountable and all components can be reused. (ARCAM)
