Private house William Barlowlaan

Plot 198 has a simple-looking façade, which reveals little about the organization of the dwelling behind it. The building comprises three storeys. The top two storeys have a standard ceiling height.

The children’s rooms are located on the first floor. On the top floor the full depth of the dwelling can be experienced because it is completely transparent. Between the bath and shower space and open sanitary space (at the front) and the sleeping area (at the back) there is only a patio, surrounded by glass sliding doors.

On the ground floor the space is six and a half metres high. Here there are two staggered mezzanine levels with glazed balustrades. Because of this intervention and because the space is sparsely furnished, both the light penetration and the various sight lines accentuate the diagonals.
At the rear of the house, the façade is glazed over the entire six and a half metres, as a result of which the equally sparse garden is visually part of the interior. This is literally the case when the occupants choose to rotate the entire kitchen unit 180 degrees in order to cook and eat outside. (ARCAM/MB)
