Aldo van Eyck stands out in the series of bridge architects. Van Eyck, who became widely known in Amsterdam for his designs for playgrounds, designed two bridges for the city.

One is the Langebrug over Zijkanaal I near Klaprozenweg in Amsterdam Noord. Halfway along the bridge is a concrete bridge control building that is striking for its simplicity. The grey, rectangular tower rises from one of the bridge piers and with its continuous ribbon window provides the bridgemaster with a three hundred and sixty degree view. The city council is currently drawing up plans to widen the bridge, which will probably result in the bridge control building being demolished.(ARCAM/space&matter)
