Old and new in harmony

The red building at number 10 Levantkade is one of the few former dock buildings to have been preserved on KNSM-eiland.

This former shipyard office building with sheds was squatted by a group of artists for a number of years. When in the early nineties the area was redeveloped as a residential district, some of the sheds were demolished in order to make way for a newbuild block. This block contains apartments and maisonettes. The maisonettes are situated on a small gallery and have wide entrances, providing space for a dining area on the gallery.

The plans for the old building were drawn up by CASA Architects, in consultation with residents and housing association Het Oosten (now called Stadgenoot). The redeveloped dock building now houses studio dwellings, small communal dwellings, studios and commercial units. The dwellings can be lived in in different ways. The new elevations for the old building are of untreated concrete blocks, in order to emphasize the difference between old and new. A glass-roofed interior street, which gives access to the communal roof terrace, has been created between the old building and the new build. (ARCAM/RS)
