Underground station on the metro’s eastern line
Weesperplein metro station is situated below the junction of Weesperstraat and Sarphatistraat and functions as an important interchange between the metro and the tram. Six stairways lead from the street to the large central entrance concourse, which functions as an underground version of Weesperplein. The stairway and entrance buildings aboveground had to be as narrow as possible so that they would occupy a minimum amount of space on the street. One of the entrances has been incorporated in the building development.
The underground square is situated approximately five metres lower than the street and contains shops and cafés. Two voids in this concourse provide a view of the platforms below. The platforms, which are situated approximately eight metres below street level, are accessed via a stairway and an escalator. When the Weesperplein station was designed, the construction of another metro line, the east-west line, was taken into account. The platform space for this new line is situated in structural work below the existing Weesperplein station.
The walls of the underground station consist of grey, porous concrete brick, in tile bonding. Porous stone was chosen in connection with the acoustics. Litter bins, fences and information columns have been painted bright orange so that they are easy to recognize. The lighting in the stations follows the circulation routes of passengers and runs parallel with the platform. For good ventilation and to prevent passengers from being blown from the platform by an approaching train, several air vents have been incorporated in the central reservation of Weesperstraat and Wibautstraat.
