Hotel at the head of Oostelijke HandelskadeMövenpick Hotel, a design by Claus & Kaan Architecten, is roughly 65 metres tall and consists of two volumes. The top part is the tower containing four hundred hotel rooms spread over the sixth to ninth floors. The tower facade is made up of horizontal bands of green granite, white concrete and glass. This cladding gives the facade a very opaque look; it does not allow an observer to read the storey height or the function of the rooms behind it. The tower stands on a plinth that extends from the new Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ (concert hall) at the western end of Oostelijk Handelskade to the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam and an office tower. This volume contains a coach terminal, a parking garage and conference halls. The tower and plinth are joined by the hotel lobby, which provides a link between the different functions. (ARCAM/TJ) |
