Seen from the city, Steigereiland is the first island on IJburg. It is also an island where most of the plots have been released to private individuals who wish to build their own home. In principle, therefore, every house is different.

The house at number 65 Jan Olphert Vaillantlaan grabs the eye first and foremost because the façade is clad with bright yellow ceramic tiles, but the façade layout is also striking. There is only one opening in the facade, behind which is an interior terrace. This outdoor space on the first floor is several metres deep and, like the dining room at the rear of the house, is double height. The kitchen is situated in the middle of the house, while the living room is on the floor above. Three bedrooms are situated on the top floor, with a bathroom in the middle. The bedroom at the front receives indirect daylight, which is reflected into the room via the inside of the façade.

This façade projects above the roof and also above the facades of the neighbouring houses. This is because of a regulation that prescribes the ratio between open and closed façade sections. In this case, the architect has taken the large façade opening as the departure point. At the rear of the house, the dining room has double-height windows with a view of the garden. This garden with its lawn adjoins the play / hobby /guest room on the ground floor and it is as if the lawn extends into the room because of the latter’s grass green floor. (ARCAM)
