On the south side of Amsterdam are three unique areas of the city. Plan Zuid, based on H.P. Berlage’s urban plan of 1915, exhibits the features of a monumental showpiece, with housing blocks in the famous Amsterdam School style. Buitenveldert, built around 1960, is an excellent example of functionalist town planning, characterized by a spacious, regular and rectilinear layout. Between these two areas is the Zuidas, a compact mixed-use district in the making, with high-rise buildings designed by celebrated Dutch and foreign architects.
This richly illustrated guide is intended for everyone who would like to know more about these fascinating areas of Amsterdam. It provides a brief introduction to backgrounds and characteristic features, as well as easy-to-use maps that show a selection of architectural highlights, supported by an index with key information. Six walking and cycle routes lead the way to exciting city explorations. The free Layar-app gives direct access to a wealth of additional information in the Architectural Guide on ARCAM’s website.
