Residential tower with 100 dwellings

The point of departure for the sixty-metre high residential tower on KNSM-eiland was that it had to be a slender tower and it had to conform to the building lines in Jo Coenen’s urban design plan for the area. The building, called Skydome, with the nickname the Zwarte Weduwe (black widow), contains 100 owner-occupied apartments on 22 floors.

The façade is composed of concrete elements with a dark grey relief which looks like natural stone. Deep joints in the façade suggest that the building consists of four sections. The tower’s height is accentuated by its slenderness, but is neutralized by the strong horizontal lines of the loggias. The standard storey contains five apartments, three of which are orientated to the south, and two to the north. The latter command a view over the IJ. All dwellings have a balcony. The socle of the building contains an underground car park, above which is a semi-public pedestrian deck with the entrances to the lifts. (ARCAM/BM)
