48,000 hexagons

A stone’s throw from the Oude Kerk is the small yet eye-catching new build project ‘Tussen de Lakens’, the final piece in the restoration and restructuring of the monumental Blaauwlakenblok. The name alludes to the two alleyways, Blaauwlakensteeg and Zwartlakensteeg, between which it is situated, and thus to the cloth dyeing works that were once located here.

This studio dwelling was designed with its first occupants specifically in mind; a creative family that previously lived in part of the Blaauwlakenblok that has now been demolished. In order to provide this family with space to create their own world, the architect designed a ‘veiled’ cube, behind which are three interconnected floors and a roof terrace. It is currently a social rental dwelling but with a view to market-sector rental in the future, the floor plans have been designed for a wide variety of potential occupants, with each room having its own spatial character.

For the expression and materiality of the ‘veil’ that encloses the building, the architect worked together with the designer Chris Kabel. The elevations are clad with white aluminium panels in which a repeating pattern of 48,000 hexagons was punched. The hexagons were bent by hand upwards and downwards, so that they catch the light or cast shadow. The horizontal aluminium frames on which the panels are mounted are anchored in the white-painted brickwork behind. The cladding panels project above the brickwork and form a balustrade around the roof terrace. (ARCAM/AT)
