Cube-shaped building with a steel construction

In accordance with the master plan, Grote Rieteiland, part of the IJburg district, is characterized by low-rise, low-density development. The self-build plots released to private individuals have resulted in a diversity of architecture.

In Mattenbiesstraat, the dwellings are situated directly on the waterside and in the southerly direction have a view of the water, Kleine Rieteiland and Diemerpark. One such house is Villa Belzen & Doucet, which was designed in close collaboration with the clients, who wanted both a family home and a workplace. The house comprises three storeys. The living room is on the ground floor, above which is the children’s storey. On the top floor are the parents’ bedroom and a workspace, which is accessed via a separate entrance and a double spiral staircase.

The house is characterized by a number of ingenious features. For example, the basis of the cube-shaped building volume consists of a steel construction, making a ‘plan libre’ possible; a flexible layout on every level. With this system, the use of concrete has been minimized and the walls do not have a load-bearing function. The walls of the timber frame are easily moveable. A cold source in the ground provides a sustainable climate control. The villa’s exterior appearance is characterized by the three storeys, each of which is rotated. Large floor to ceiling windows provide maximum daylighting and optimize the view of the water. That the volumes appear to hover is due to, among other things, the setback glazed lower fronts and invisible floor edges. The sliding glass doors in each room blur the boundary between indoors and outdoors, giving the villa the aura of a beach house. (ARCAM)
