Statue of Liberty Amsterdam

A Statue of Liberty for Amsterdam on the tip of Java Eiland

On view at the Amsterdam Architecture Centre this summer are ten design proposals, by students at the Academy of Architecture, for a Statue of Liberty on the tip of Java Eiland. This proposal for a new cultural icon could help to spread tourists across the city.

Festive Opening:
The design proposals will be presented on Tuesday 11 July at 5PM in Architecture Centre Amsterdam. The exhibition will be officially opened by Jord Den Hollander, architect, film maker and visiting lecturer at the University of Architecture Amsterdam. The evening will be complimented by a live performance of   ‘A New Sound from the Ancient World’ by Amsterdam Conservatory student Maté Lachegyi.

Amsterdam is facing a huge challenge over the coming years. The number of inhabitants and visitors is increasing, which in turn increases pressure on the use, layout and experience of public space in the city. Coinciding with the publication of the advisory report ‘De stad is nooit af’ (the city is never finished), in which Amsterdam’s arts council proposes creating new cultural icons outside the orbital motorway, the Amsterdam Architecture Centre, together with the Academy of Architecture, is presenting ten design proposals for a Statue of Liberty on the tip of Java Eiland.

Forty-five students at the Academy of Architecture were given the assignment to design a Statue of Liberty for Amsterdam with a practical and idealistic aim. It provides a site for recreation outside the city centre, encouraging tourists to spread out. In addition, the Statue of Liberty is a beacon of liberty on a cultural and historical site, providing information about Amsterdam and its mixed population through the centuries. This at a time of increasing intolerance in the city.

A selection of ten very diverse models will be on view at the Amsterdam Architecture Centre this summer. With the musical expression of the concept of liberty, composed by a student at the Amsterdam Conservatory, and a funding and revenue model developed for one of the designs by two students of business economics at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, this project is a Gesamtkunstwerk. Through this unique collaboration, the project aims to be a serious step towards realizing a future Statue of Liberty for Amsterdam. The hope is that the exhibition will inspire the city council and developers to bring the project to fruition.

The participating students of the University of Architecture are: Boukje Bügel-Gabreëls, Esther Bentvelsen, Alex Berkmann, Stephanie van Dullemen, Koen Karst, Philip Lyaruu, Matteo Paris, Elena Staskute, Flavius Ventel and Piero Vidoni.

The Statue of Liberty Amsterdam is an initiative by Ties van Dijk, manager at VOLA Netherlands BV, selling taps and accesories in timeless Danish design and developing relevant cultural-social activities. Project Partners are VOLA, University of Architecture Amsterdam, Architecture Centre Amsterdam, Amsterdam Conservatory and The University of Applied Sciences – Business Eeconomics.
