Housing block at the tip of IJburg Oost
The easternmost part of the IJburg district, Haveneiland Oost, is characterized by a strict urban grid with large blocks on the rectangular plots. The geometry of plot 64 deviates from this and determined the design of the housing complex Vrijmanseind.
The east side of the building volume follows the islands diagonal shape in a stepped fashion, giving rise to an expressive exterior appearance, which is reinforced by the rhythm of the variously positioned balconies. The large glazed lower fronts not only provide a stunning view over the water, together with the shiny aluminium spandrel panels, they also lend this side of the block a glistening character. The other three elevations are more neutral. The storey height windows with brown aluminium frames, interspersed with narrow strips of slightly shiny brick, give rise to a barcode pattern. This complies with the amenity authoritys requirement that the façade should be organized vertically. The building height increases towards the tip of the plot and marks the end of the block and of IJburg. The taller volume contains multiple family dwellings, while the adjacent singlefamily dwellings are grouped around an inner courtyard in a serpentine configuration.
Due to the ingenious layout, all 45 dwellings are oriented on two or three sides. In contrast to the vertical lines of the outside elevations, the inside elevations are organized horizontally. The façade cladding of yellow and green coloured glass panels gives the galleries a cheerful ambience. Considerable attention has been given to the exterior spaces in order to reinforce the sense of being in the outdoors and to exploit the open view here on IJburgs furthest tip. (ARCAM)
