IJburg is a new city district that has been built on a series of specially constructed artificial islands in IJmeer. The westernmost island, Steigereiland, is a testing ground for architectural and urbanistic concepts, which have been worked up in individual neighbourhoods. Most of the land on Steigereiland has been released in the form of private plots to private individuals. A strip of land on the islands western edge is reserved for commercial enterprises. The buildings here benefit from a visually strategic location, while also serving as a barrier for the motorway noise from the nearby A10 motorway.
The mixed-use building at numbers 13-31 is the result of so-called commercial collective commissioning. Maatschap Steigereiland 101d was set up by four individuals, two of whom are also users of the building. With an eye to the buildings function an assembly workshop where simulators and high-tech movement systems are developed and tested GROUP A designed a vibration-free structure. The solid concrete building contains huge open spaces, which are flexible in use as a production area, showroom, warehouse or office. The exterior is entirely of rust-coloured corten steel, interspersed with transparent materials such as polycarbonate and glass. The northern elevation and the elevation on the water side are characterized by large glazed areas. On the street side, an exciting opening has been created in the largely closed façade. This opening, in which a staircase is concealed, rises to the first storey where it extends across virtually the entire length of the building. Because the roof has been omitted here, daylight enters the gallery directly from above, giving rise to an exciting exterior space. (ARCAM)
