Urban block with commercial centre

The master plan of Haveneiland West is based on a grid pattern filled in with large urban blocks. Each block is handled by a specific team of architects, one of whom coordinates the block project. The consortium Waterstad 5 engaged three architecture studios to work on Block 5. Architectenbureau Ellerman Lucas Van Vugt prepared the preliminary design, and the task of designing specific subprojects fell to two “young” architecture practices: Arons & Gelauff Architecten and Koers Zeinstra Van Gelderen Architecten.

The specified functions of Block 5 include IJburg’s first shopping centre, social sector housing, business spaces and an underground car park. As intended in the master plan, the block consists of a combination of volumes of differing construction heights. The diversity was bolstered by the sharing of effort among the three architecture firms, which resulted in a different facade design on each of the four surrounding streets. The use of a uniform material, brick, gives the design its unity. The 199 rental apartments are disposed on the top three floors. Residents share communal roof gardens from where they enjoy views of the public courtyards and squares located between the individual volumes of the block. (ARCAM/YK)
