Housing block with two faces

This red brick residential block is located on Haveneiland in the new Amsterdam borough of IJburg. The front of the 52-apartment block faces onto the street, and the rear onto a canal. It was commissioned by IJburger Maatschappij and designed by Vera Yanovshtchinsky Architecten in collaboration with Archipel Ontwerpers.

The most striking characteristic of the building is the contrast between the front and the rear. The street side of the building is unadorned and strictly regular, while the canalside rear presents a highly varied appearance. The rear makes a deliberately incomplete impression, and it indeed offers residents possibilities for altering their homes. The building includes units of varying types with flexible floor plans. The passages through the main volume reinforce the connection between the landward side and the water. (ARCAM/BP)
