New housing blocks at fifties square

The area around the Confuciusplein square in Geuzenveld-Slotermeer is being redeveloped as part of the regeneration of the Westelijke Tuinsteden and will result in a greener, safer and more vibrant neighbourhood with a contemporary housing stock. The basic structure, with the square at the centre surrounded by four residential areas, is to be retained.

Some of the flats around Confuciusplein have already been demolished in order to make way for housing blocks with commercial spaces in the plinth. In addition to the three new blocks, Van Sambeek Architects also designed the concept for the redevelopment of Confuciusplein. Characteristics of the original 1950s development reappear in a modern reworking, which can be seen in the brickwork, for example, and in the horizontal lines. Large white frames mark the individual dwellings within the volumes.

The ‘Averroes’ block on the south side of Confuciusplein contains owner-occupied, two- to five-room apartments with south-facing balconies. The apartments are accessed via a gallery with a view over Confuciusplein and right along Burgemeester Van Leeuwenlaan. The height of the block drops from four storeys to two storeys at the rear, as a result of which the whole fits in seamlessly with the low-rise neighbourhoods behind.

‘Avicenna’ and ‘Noordblok’ are situated on the north side of Confuciusplein. Together with the original development they form an urban block around a communal inner garden courtyard. Avicenna contains market-sector rental dwellings. Noordblok contains social rental dwellings, dwellings for the elderly and an organization for displaced persons (HVO). The dwellings are accessed via galleries on the inside of the complex. The five-storey development forms a strong urban frontage on the square. The loggias that fold inwards here from within the white frames underline the relationship between the interior of the dwelling and the square. A border of trees along the development will give rise to an intimate green square, which has all the potential to become the vibrant heart of the neighbourhood once again. (ARCAM)
