Masterly undulating surfaces

The commission to realize three large apartment complexes in and in the immediate vicinity of Meerhuizenplein was quite unique, because this square forms the heart of a neighbourhood which is characterized by remarkably well-preserved examples of Amsterdam School architecture. Furthermore, the area is part of the monumental Plan Zuid.

The new-build links in with the historic façades with their masterly brick undulating surfaces. All of the elevations consist of a dark brick plinth, above which is a façade surface of yellow brick. In the square, the building has a striking zigzag form, whereas in the side streets it has a more restrained character. In total there are 34 rented and 71 owner-occupied dwellings, including three-, four- and five-room dwellings. (ARCAM/BU)
