Diversity due to multiple architects
The Scheepvaartkwartier is one of the links in the chain of redevelopment operations in Osdorp. The renewal of this former city district began some decades ago and its centre now functions as the commercial heart of the entire Westelijke Tuinsteden area. Just to the south of the shopping centre, the housing characteristic of the area, in open rows and L-shaped blocks, has made way for the new residential development Scheepvaartkwartier. This high-density housing development, in blocks that are considerably taller than the surrounding development, is being realized in seven sections. The blocks on the north side, including those designed by Geurst & Schulze, were completed in 2012.
The other architectural firms commissioned to design blocks here are hvdn architects, Moriko Kira, Nine Oaks and AWG architects. Consequently there is considerable variety as regards façade composition and cladding, types of access and exterior spaces. The two blocks by Geurst & Schulze stand out with their red brick elevations and decorative elements of concrete (half) columns. Concrete bands that continue around the corners and over the balconies provide horizontal articulation. Behind the façade is a diverse array of dwelling types: apartments, gallery-access flats, maisonettes and ground-accessed single-family dwellings, with balconies on the street sides and private exterior spaces in the inner garden courtyard below. The courtyard is the roof of a parking garage and also the communal exterior space around which all of the blocks are situated. A new waterway, the Nieuwe Osdorpergracht, is to be a central element in the organization and positioning of the district. (ARCAM/AK/MB)
